"As a Hong Kong political exile in the U.K., Honcques Laus is at my next generation who overcame the loneliness and isolation of being in exile. Instead of giving up, he continues to spread the philosophical classics of democracy and freedom, and made a pioneering attempt to preserve the language and culture of Hong Kong . Laus also initiates the 'Free the Books' campaign with Hongkongers in Britain (HKB), and is committed to preserving Hong Kong's 'banned books' in the libraries around the world. His effort for freedom of the press, thought, and speech has been consistent and obvious to all, so he deserves our support."

- Simon Cheng,  exiled pro-democracy activist, founder of Hongkongers in Britain (HKB)

About this book:

Drawing on his three decades of experience in the region, the new volume by HKFP’s columnist traces Hong Kong’s tumultuous relationship with Beijing in recent years, right up to the current political crackdown.

The work delves into the existential questions plaguing the region today, and what it means for the wider world: “Is Xi’s China as unshakeable as it seems? What are its real interests in Hong Kong? Why are Beijing’s time-honoured means of control no longer working there? And where does this leave Hongkongers themselves?”

circle-cropped%20(7)_edited.png

Joshua Wong, Hong Kong’s most famous democracy advocate

A detailed chronicle of Hong Kong’s fight in the face of repression. Anyone who cares about Hong Kong and China will definitely want to read this book.

circle-cropped%20(5)_edited.png

Lord Chris Patten, last British governor of Hong Kong

A superb book about Beijing’s ruthless and depressing efforts to stamp out Hong Kong’s freedoms, erode its rule of law and attack its identity as an open society. Vines, a brave and distinguished journalist, sets this sad story of a great international city within the brutal politics of the Chinese regime.

Philip Sherwell, Asia correspondent, The Sunday Times

A definitive, compelling account of a drama that has gripped the world. Vines interweaves frontline reporting, insights from key players and a local’s knowledge to chronicle Hong Kong’s defiant challenge to the might of Xi Jinping’s China.

Nathan Law, Hong Kong pro-democracy activist

One of the most important stories of our times of the fight against authoritarian regimes. The best way to understand China is through the lens of Hong Kong’s struggles.
